Eh, I wouldn't really say anything too highly of Freddy. His fifth movie pretty much lost him any credibility.

Jason X sucked too though. But not quite as bad, or humiliating.

Friday = consistently, pleasantly mediocre all the way through.

Nightmare = Gets worse with every sequel, even though it didn't really get bad until 5.

Friday was fun, whereas Nightmare started to rot. Freddy became more of a comedian with each film and his face got less scary looking. By Freddy vs Jason he was just a fucking pussy all the way through; shame, as you're right, it did get more experimental, and it had a shit ton of potential.
